IMPORTANT FOR ALL ARTISTS

Journal Entry: Mon Feb 4, 2013, 10:26 AM
HIII! :iconbunnyloveplz:
Im sorry but today will be kind of a journal spam, you dont need to read all of course, but there has been a lot I wanted to say for such a long time
And as Im home and sick, I thought I would use this time to get some thoughts out ♥

This is about COMMISSIONS and art in general.
Load this video and watch it while you read my words ahaha :iconiluplz:

www.youtube.com/watch?feature=…

Please spread this video so more artists can hear it! ;;; It is only 5 mins long :heart:

I know many people are upset with my commissions prices ahaha QAQ
But really, Im already working at a minimum wage. However I also agree that I am expensive if you compare with the other artists on dA. Which I think is sad.
It is not that Im expensive on purpouse. Im selling my art what it is worth for my time.

Is one thing if I need emergency money, but when you do this for fun, then yes, it should not be for free ;;;
It is my time and experience. If someone is selling something that takes them an hour to do below 10 $, yep, it is waaay under priced.
*Im pointing at you right there*:iconsawbplz:

I LOVE to buy commissions, and the more cheaper the merrier for the buyer, but really, all we do is to bring the artists downhill with this. Even if you just do commissions for fun, if you are too cheap, then everyone else will need to lower their price too or else they wont get anything sold.

Anyways, the video explains way better than I do, so sorry for my small rant ahaha, no need for firey discussions ♥ Just putting my small opinion out here :iconnanakosobplz:

Ah Best post ever. This guy is a genius!
Thank you for showing him to us.
Sadly u need high exposure on DA to have high demand so you can raise prices. Like you have such a high demand you can raise them high. Sadly not everyone can do so OTL... Like if i calculate the time and effort I put in my biggest commissions it would be easily double to price OTL (cause i spend atleast 12 hours on them) sadly it will be too much then.

I'm going for my art degree, but I recently saw on Yahoo that says people aren't looking for artists right now. THAT IS COMPLETE BULLSHIT. How do you think all of these fancy companies get commercials and stuff done? Artists. How do you think those fast food places like mc donald's and burger king have their designs on their cups and wrappers and bags? Hell even the damn KETCHUP PACKETS? ARTISTS. As much as the world may make you believe the contrary, it is an undeniable fact that WE AS ARTISTS RUN THIS BITCH. Websites? Artists. Buildings? Artists. (technically architects but same thing) Those paintings you see in the dentist's office? ARTISTS. Business Cards? ARTISTS. Like I said, we run this bitch. If it weren't for artists these companies would have a HELL of a time trying to sell their crap. Everything that guy said was true. Don't cheapen yourself, make them pay, especially when you're gonna put your valuable time and effort to make their fat corporate asses look better. Free? They can get a middle finger for free. So cheer up guys, and jack those prices up, because you're definitely worth more than you or any of these assholes think you are. So bring it ON assholes! We're ready for you.

Aww this is so true ;u; Although, I sometimes see really OVERPRICED art. Like 800 points for a full body with no background!to be honest I didn't like the art very much... not gonna say who it so >.<" Recently I stopped doing free requests. They take really much time... plus I wanna draw something for myself too :( About 50% of my artworks are for other lol~

I only did free requests, because I thought no one would pay money for my art, but after watching this, I think I should ask money too, not much but... I just thought that I'm going to draw requests for free at the beginning, but actually, when I think about it, I should have asked money... xD Well, I have to think about it xDD

I watched the video as well, the guy is right ;A;
and I somehow get really offended when some people ask me for requests > > I do give out freebies a lot but some people.... urgh. >A<;

but the thing is, art is still sold cheaply around... everywhere so I suppose it's hard for us all to suddenly increase all our prices TvT;;
I sell my art A LOT under the minimum wage, and believe me, it's not high over here TvT;; I work on a chibi for, like, 3 hrs and I charge something a little more than an hour of minimum wage. ;A; and yet somehow both the commissioner and I prolly think it's overpriced. OTL
I don't exactly want all the art prices to suddenly shoot sky high (compared to the prices we have now), but it would be nice to see some changes on the worth of art happening ;v;"

It's sad how people on da are used to work cheap, I would like to ask a lot more for commsiions on my main acocunt, but noone would pay. And I felt this pressure of working for nothing in special when I was using the mouse but noone was buying anyway.
It is aslo the problem of few people having money to buy more expensive commisions and that's why they are so cheap, me , for example, I have points that I got from adopts or commsiions and I can spend them how I want but I don't afford to buy art even at 1$ in reality . _ . Is hard.
And aslo, if you someone noone knows on DA, you have no chance to sell something for $

Ahhhh I know exactly what this is like! Sadly, it's impossible to avoid if you want to be competitive. I've been to a number of cons where people are flogging art for next-to-nothing. That kind of under-cutting leaves me no choice but to align my prices better with theirs! >_<

Get well soon Yamio~! :iconaawplz:

I really agree to the video and what you've said~ *^*
But even though you said that it'll be underpriced for something that takes 1 hour to do to cost $10, in my case I don't think something I can produce in 1 hour would worth $10 lol! TuT;;;;;
Personally I think that it depends on the artist's art style and skills~
I think that artists with more distinct styles normally price higher for commissions, while those inexperienced / newer artists tend to lower their commission prices so that there'll be a higher chance for people to commission them!
If the artist takes a long time to draw something but their drawings aren't of high quality then it makes no difference if they give higher price for their commissions since nobody will commission them ;;;;

I think it's wrong to compare the commission prices with other artists on dA though, cuz I think the price should be set based on the quality, time and effort put into the drawing~ *^*

Honestly I'd love to open up for commission in the future but I have absolutely no idea how much they worth TAAAT
but I'd love to commission other artists too ;;;; and I can't do that if I don't have the money oTL
:iconcryforeverplz:

>w< I saw this video from :iconyuumei: as we'll, and I found it very inspiring

It made me realize just how much I was under valuing my work and time. (( because I was being payed some times under 50 cents an hour and that was starting to really get to me Q-Q )) and I do enjoy making something for my art, but I'm better off not taking jobs if I'm only being payed that much for a peice that could take 10 hours...

Thats why I closed my commissions recentaly

And I also decided to make art for myself and not try to make it look like others work just to get it excepted....

But either way in the future if I open commissions again, I will hope to charge what I am worth.. >^<

Thank you for posting this video Yamio ; o ;
I do not know if I have very expensive commissions or not but I always wish I had the guts to increase the price. I feel like I cannot though because everyone is used to my prices and will most likely complain if I raise it even by $1/hr...I know I am very lucky that people even want to commission me, but when I calculated my average pay to be anywhere from $3-$5USD, it really pains me to take commissions because I can make WAY more at my normal job.

Typically I just draw for fun, but when I come across demanding commissioners + the low pay, I just want to give up commissions all together!

Anyway, thank you for reading and posting this journal. I hope people will be more understanding of your pricing now :iconsweethugplz:

I still don't understand how I should price my drawings.. I guess I should start cheap, and once more and more people point commish me, I could raise the price? Is that a good idea? I'm not sure what I should do.. If I raise the price, I feel that my drawings aren't really worth that much. Opinions, please? Check out my gallery and tell me what you think? ^^" I'm still a new deviant, and I would love to get far with my drawings >///< Thank you!~ :iconrubcheeksplz:

I wish I knew how to price things but I always feel like my art isn't worth anything $20+ even if I spend quite a long time e.o . The most expensive base price I have is $17 for a fullbody that would take me around 5 hours. I still feel it's a bit too pricey because of the amount of orders I'm getting which isn't very much. But hey, at least I have some which is better than none.
I use comparison with other artists for my art, which is a bit frustrating. I see both good artists who charge less than I do and not-very-good artists charging $30 for a really messy/random drawing. You feel like you're being to greedy and at the same time feel like it's unfair. I don't completely go with the per hour wage either(because if I did my icon would be like $16+). I see most people who sell icons sell it for $10, even if they aren't even really good IMO. And then I see people like Mimru who charge about $8 dfjklghldksfhfgfdj ;;;;;; I love her work
I tend get jealous (to be honest) of those who don't have the best skill/ effort and charge a lot yet get tons of commissions (sometimes due to their popularity coming from other things//gets hit). Like if they make a really messy piece that they consider as 'finished' but it didn't take much effort and quicker than expected and get tons of demands. I heard this from somewhere but it's kind of like people who like to buy 'branded' things (because that certain person seems to be rather popular from some other source or maybe some other source unrelated to their skill). Like my friend who buy a lot of designer clothes that look identical to this $5 one. I always scold her for it though xD And maybe my mom, not all the designer clothes she gives me are better than something from an ordinary store. I sounded pretty mean there //sobsob
If I try to put it up at the moment I won't be able to sell anything at all because I keep bumping my prices up and I'm not very successful either.
---
For the pricing thing, part of it has to be by a per-hour basis and part of it has to be skill because then if you spend two hours on a bad smiley face then should you charge $16? After all the main thing people look at is the final product, and then they see the effort and such xD
And those who usually ask for free art aren't very into art so they wouldn't know how it's like...

AHHHH SORRY FOR THE MASSIVE WALL OF TEXT THAT WOULD NEED A HERD OF ELEPHANTS TO JUST BREAK DOWN.

You have a point, but keep in mind that if prices are too high no one will be able to enjoy seeing their characters drawn so beautifully. Still, though, it's hard to put a price on skill and I guess it's up to the artist. Some people, though, assume that it's EASY and their time is more important than yours, so you should be flattered that they want anything from you at all.

A while ago, I said something about overpriced commissions and I now see that that's wrong. There is no such thing. You are the one drawing it, you are allowed to charge what you want and if people don't like it they don't have to commission you.

I actually do free commissions (requests), but only from watchers and my friend can NOT seem to get that through her head. She doesn't watch me, so she must not care very much about my art, but STILL wants me to bother with HER DeviantID, and a gift for HER friend who I don't even know...it's just stupid.

Ah, I really dis like when the random people come by my page and ask me for art when they obviously have not read my page where I say no requests, and they are not watchers or haven't faved any of my art!

Rude people.

And yeh I get the feeling that I ought to take commissions for cheap because it's an honor for some one to want a peice from me Q-Q

Just because someone doesn't watch you doesn't mean they don't care. If she is asking for your art, doesn't that show she cares? And if you know her better than your watchers, and call her friend, doesn't that matter to you?

Not exactly. I think it's more like she thinks I'm better than her, but doesn't really feel the need to show it or support me. Don't get me wrong, I don't really need it, but it would be nice to be appreciated and for her to reciprocate instead of me making stuff for her and supporting her and not really getting anything in return. It would just be nice, you know? I watch her and support her...but she went inactive after a few days and not having 100 watchers. She expects things to be handed to her on a silver platter.

Maybe I'm being unfair to her. I don't know, I'm not in her head. But rules are rules and I can't give her special treatment because I know her in real life, so I'm not going to draw her the darn ID. I don't even think she bothered to check and see if the requests were open. More than anything, I think she just doesn't understand that these take me an average of five hours and it's not very considerate of her to spring these on me. She doesn't really ask, she just says "I have a request. Draw me so-and-so. Thanks!"

At this point I might just be venting. But can you see why I don't want to draw anything for her at the moment?

I do understand. Just know this, a friend is a friend, and the DO deserve special treatment. Especially the ones who are there for you. This is a great video, but I was disappointed when the general reaction to it was "now I'm ONLY going to draw for money!!" That is NOT what this video was about.

Maybe she just hadn't gotten around to it yet. Honestly I don't follow half my friends and they don't follow me, but we constantly gift each other and leave comments. We just like different types of art, so we agree to keep a distance. That doesn't mean we aren't friends.

I'm not saying she isn't my friend or anything. And I see your point. This girl often has passive-aggressive behavior sometimes though. And for the record, we like the same kinds of art because she wanted me to teach her how to draw in the first place, which I did.
I dunno. She's done it now, which is nice for me I guess. Something still feels off though, and I can't put my finger on it.

BUT
I will say, that people giving away art or doing only 10 points... its really driving prices down
heck, art that i spend 10+ hours on is going for less than 100 points -_-
this guy has some good points. thank you for spreading this.
heck people beg me for drawings in real life a lot, and me being all quiet and shy and very submissive as i am xD i just do it.
But...
I don't think i'm gonna do that any more...

tbh that's true.
bc my classmates are actually those people who request
for this and that
wanna know why?
it's because i'm cheaper than a dollar store
then when my classmate gets her zayn malik drawing she complains about it and she's not even grateful
i don't need to waste off energy for people who are just going to complain about if it's good or not, like seriously..
i never ever do requests now days
im starting commissions and if someone just asks for a request i'll be all like
:iconwthplz: draw your own shit, stop editing my stuff
or like
NO YOU DONT GET IT FOR FREE. YOU PAY. OK?
and if they don't they say goodbye to all of it and this is business
because people keep on using me just because ' im nice '
just because someone gives u something doesn't mean they're nice you call them nice because they're so cheap than a dollar store that's people use us, artists.

Seriously, screw them! and for artists that DO do requests, why the hell would you waste your time and energy for some person who doesn't have to give a single cent of their money??? No effin way!
