About my name, copying and tracing

Journal Entry: Thu Nov 8, 2012, 3:05 PM
Hii everyone! :iconiluplz:

Thank you all for the support and funny comments on my last journal XD I loved reading them through haha ;;; ~♥
Anyways I have had a subject on my mind for quite the time that I thought was pretty accurate right now.

I have seen many artist on this site getting extremely angry and upset when people copy them. Whenever it is behavioral, page layout or style of drawing.
Some people even get so mad they call out on these people and make them look bad and bashes them. ;;;

I can understand why you would get mad. Even I get upset when I see someone heavily copy me and then donīt credit at all.
But really, just think after for a while. "Why did they copy just you?"

Iīm not saying that you should treat copying as some kind of flatter, but sometimes you actually have to consider some stuff.
How old are this person?
and WHY did they want to copy you?

If it is to gain popularity or to just the mock the artist in question I believe it is wrong and you can ask them to stop ;;
But, if they are 12-15 years old, new to deviantart or just looking up to their idol and want to be like them.. Then please be gentle everyone QwQ
They are admiring, they want to be THEM, they LOVE them. They donīt know what they do is wrong ;A;

Even if they copy your name, itīs the same thing. The wish to be somewhat closer to a person just like you, to be you ~

Iīm going to tell you as short as possibly *I can be quite of a rambler* how I got my deviantart name and such.

When I was younger *around 5-6 years ago* I admired a girl soooo much! At that time I could barely speak english and I was only on Swedish websites. Specially the one called BCmanga~

Anyways, her name was YAMIATEMU <------ *look at the name guys* XDD;
I called her *as the little girl new to manga world* Yami-Sempaaaai ~♥♥
I TRULY looked up to her!
When she posted a drawing, I tried to draw a drawing similar to her and upload it.
Credit and such? I didnīt even what that kind of thing meant haha ;;

Iīm pretty sure I must been a pretty creepy fan.
I even have my OWN FOLDER, still today, with the name of her OC, Naoki-kun, as I drew her gifts ALL THE TIME. I loved her OC as it was my own.
I admired her drawing skills so much, and the cuteness and designs!
I wanted to be JUST LIKE HER! I tried to talk to her as much as I can!

However BCmanga *the website* Went down, and she moved to Deviantart, and no longer by the name Yami. But as MaruiTenshi.
I took the opportunity to take her name, but only adding a O. YamiO XD; as she wasnīt using it anymore neither wanted to be called that.

At that time I didnīt feel guilty of doing it, I was just so happy and eager to be just as good as her one day!
And today, all my Friend calls me Yami, Yamio, Yamis etc. even IRL that is my nickname now.

So point is, I might have copied her name, but it became me in the end, and Iīm a completely different person from her.
So guys, donīt worry that your lil fans will take over your spot or be you, you are still you.
Nobody can BE you and people know that ♥
They are their own person as well.

It is a different thing if the person is around 18, no longer young and naive, knows about credit rules, and still copies you and refuse to admit it and donīt give you credit. And ref all of your pictures.
Then we can say we have a problem XD;
But if as I said, a person is younger, new to internet world, donīt even know what stuff like credit or not taking over your idols style and name means, donīt be to harsh on them ;;

Thatīs the only time I take it to heart and feel bad ;;;

If the person is older, know what they are doing and practically are trying to steal your identity then it becomes a little disturbing, but not otherwise ;; for me at least.

ALSO! About tracing

For me itīs okay if you trace my art how much as you want! As LONG AS YOU DONīT UPLOAD IT! Then it will be counted as a trace and itīs not fair ;;
If you ref, donīt forget to add credit!
It only make the artist happy when they see that they have been credited, than not being credited.
We can recognize our own styles VERY EASY, and if you donīt want to get in trouble by other either, credit is always the best. You will only gain respect not look downers, no worry ♥

THANK YOU FOR READING IT ALL! *I have cut out so much text already, why do I write so much ;;*

I was accused of tracing a piece just because it was drawn in MSPaint and was of exceptional quality.
I can draw well from a reference.
This user is still at large sending haters and is now stalking my watchers list sending hate notes to all my friends.
They furthered to go on about my old art and say:
"It's really shit they can't draw something like that"
"my art is good compared to yours, yours is just shit"

and even though people had been in a watching me draw it,he called them:

He even drove one of them to tears making them think they were a psychopath, a loonatic.

All becUse I can draw well from a reference.
And now? Now I feel like shit and want to die

Wow...I'm like that with a lot of artists, to be honest. Their art is so inspiring and awesome that I want to be like them.... ;n; for example, some of my biggest idols(even when I hadn't joined dA yet) is :icondreachu:,:icontinachan90:, :iconteamrocketspikachu: and :iconrileyav: I even have more inspirations/idols that I look up to, including you Yamis~ :iconinamiblushplz: But I know that tracing and copying is wrong, so that's why I came up with my own style(which keeps on changing unfortunately XD).

Also, I didn't know :iconmaruitenshi: was your sempai. That's awesome to know and your backstory is touching .u.

You know, I'm just about the same as you right now, gosh *v*; .
Btw, it's nice to know that someone can warn people without any bashing on dA xD; ... it's pretty sad ..

Love your art, Yami-senpai.
AwesomeCanadians123 Featured By Owner Nov 9, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
oh oh oh and you find your own style, if your 'own' style is hard to keep redrawing then it's not your own but your own style will be there for others to look up too that's why I love seeing people's old works ^^
AwesomeCanadians123 Featured By Owner Nov 9, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I was like this over many artists hahaha, I am a real big fan of you and I'm 15 so I'm in that range XD But who doesn't want to draw like you? XD You are very inspiring, e.g. this journal XD. But anyways, your just a sweet person and got me back into dA and starting to draw again and because you were so nice I wanted to copy the way you write like all the cute faces to seem happy and that, I like being a happy person :3. To get to the point, this is mainly the reason people copy XD, well done for pointing it out :D

I had a little girl about 8 look up at my art, she used to try and copy my work too >w< It was adorable~ But there are people that i know who have tried to copy me just for fame, -_-; and she would use my channel and my popularity to get her own. Now that was wrong. Sorry now im rambling XD But i totally understand where you are coming from <3

I love reading your journals, and I totally understand what your saying.
Most of the people are copying images from Google and they don't even think that they are copying from someone who worked hard.. ^ ^ '
But I can also understand people who get really mad when people are copying from them ~

I think it's not a big problem as it may sound xD I mean...apart from art theft, then name's immitation, copyin and tracin to me are just the ways ppl express the love to your art ,as long as they give credit xD I want some one to be affected by my art too >.< why so serious :v

deeply, i have one major idol and i want to be like her so bad. but copying wont help! if i just copied her style my whole life no improvement is going to happen. getting your own style and making other people get interest in your work is the best thing that could ever happen in their lives! living as copying other people's art WONT make any differences. finding your own path and going through it will work!! i know i may sound weird but i dont think copying will help making you have a style ^^; sorry im not very good at expressing myself~ ^^;
sorry for my grammer and spellings!! im just 13 ^^;

As a kid, 10 until 12, all I did was trace but I also started to develop my own taste and it made me change pictures to the way I wanted them to be. My point is, not all tracing is evil but rather it is claiming it as your own that's wrong.

Ive done a couple of traces but i always credit the artist and disclaim that i am not the original maker. The reason i have traced is that my drawing skills are not quite what i wish them to be yet. So i need practice while i also wish to see how my OC's would look the way i imagine them (And not in the horrible way i draw from scratch). I search speficicly for pictures i know i can transform to look as close as possible to them and then its killing two birds with one stone. :3

I actually love your story! Lol. :meow:

I experiment with styles and colouring a lot, I get inspired by many many artists, you included.
I look at the way they would draw something, their proportions or inspect the way colouring was done, so that I could practice it too and apply it to my own work. My intention isn't to copy someone... just learn from them. Since I consider myself a young-ish artist and want to learn and improve as much as I can! :dummy:

When my friend and I were younger, we always traced drawings and studied them. ^^' We never posted them online of course, because I had no idea it existed then, derp de herp. did it because I really admired them, as I got to know about
art more, I stopped naturally but it really makes me feel
sad when artists do point out people like that and people
start accusing without hearing their side.

Even now, I'm too shy to post my art still aha;;;

Hm... funny enough *Clavies said something about this too, on her tumblr I believe.... She said so many things that are similar to this...

But on my point, I think that copying isn't something I would encourage anyone to do, even if they're 12-15.
Most of these people want to make art a career and in no way should they be given any permission to even copy. I understand that they're looking up to their favorite artist, but just like I did, they have to learn to develop their "own" style by taking their favorite parts of all of their idols' styles and putting them together (or come up with something themselves). It allows for them to be more comfortable with drawing rather than allowing them to copy someone's else's style and them not being comfortable drawing that way.
I can say this because I've TRIED to copy POP, one of my idols ([link]) yet I was NEVER comfortable trying to draw like them. It was painful and didn't like it at all; but I did like their style of artwork. I learned then that I should just appreciate their style instead of trying to draw in a style that I'm not comfortable with.

Yes harsh, but if you really are looking to make any money off of your artwork, ANY type of currency (real money or online currency) you cannot copy someone else's style, even if you really look up to that artist and are young.
Either way it wouldn't be easy to and I'm sure the copier wouldn't be comfortable doing it.
Yamio Featured By Owner Nov 9, 2012  Professional Digital Artist
Really? Never seen it actually haha ;; But the more artist the better!
I know some other people mentioned it before as well, itīs quite a broad subject ;v;

I donīt agree with you, I would gladly encouraging everyone to copy their idols at young age. When I say copy I donīt mean you should copy every picture and upload it, but take it to your heart and hands and learn from it.

We all have to copy, all artist have to.
It is impossible to start out as an artist without aiming for a certain style at all. We learn from what we have seen, intentional or not. We canīt learn from a vacuum. We canīt learn to speak our own language if we donīt hear the humans around us speak it.

A dancer have to learn from their superior how do to certain moves before they can put up their own dance video.

A singer have to learn how to maintain their voice before they start making records. ;;

Many big artist have copied from the start, and often itīs not visible as they have developed within time and AGE their own style.
Alot of youngsters start out with "how to draw" book and copies from THERE before going their own path. Humans learn with imitating, simple as that. QwQ

Many big artist out there, even on Deviantart, copy certain Pixiv artists to 100% and make a big profit from it ;; Their style I mean then.

And like I said in the journal, you will know that you shouldnīt upload it without credit and such later. You just need someone to kindly tell you.
And if you are so young and naive while copying, I highly doubt they would try to sell it, then their intentions are different than admiring the artist ;W;
Starry-Shizen Featured By Owner Nov 9, 2012
Ah well... I understand where you're coming from....but some of them want to start a career in this. knowing most, they spend years copying a style that they like, and when they do, they lose all focus of everything else. I know. I've been there multiple times. I'm glad I got out of it before I turned 13 because that's when I started to experiment more with things I'm comfortable with...
Honestly I'm for the copying if it's going to stay a hobby that won't turn into a career or go beyond amateur status but for a professional's completely different. You've mentioned things that start from basics...copying their mentor, who has been through the basics and are just teaching it to another person.
In art, the basics start from realism and spawn out. A great foundation is truly drawing from life. Without drawing from life, you won't understand what you're doing and end up with something similar to this old drawing of mine: [link] (well it won't look as bad as that, but it will look like you don't know what you're doing)
They have to learn to draw without stylization first. Then once they understand drawing from life, they can stylize. As heavily as even butchering the anatomy to create character.

Truthfully, having idols and drawing like them gets them going but in the long run will help them no more than what they think they know.
Also, the only reason why people from the renaissance and onward started to copy other artists was because it looked realistic and gave perspective that surrounded humans rather than drawing flat drawings of Mary and Jesus and God that didn't look real.

Whoops there I go talking about history....uhewwwakjbeajkae.....

tl;dr Idols are good to have and they give you a goal as to what you want to draw, but a true foundation especially for artists wanting to be professional later, is drawing what they see in everyday life. Basically, copying from life.

I agree so strongly with you ;w;
As obvious in my gallery, I really looked up to Oceanchan. However, as time progressed, I developed my own twists and such so now the only thing particularly similar are the eyes- and they're still a bit different.
I took *melodeiia, =Yamio, *oceanchan and *emperpep's style and made them into mine ^^
but it makes me so mad when I find people almost TRACING melodeiias pixels and selling them >_>
Starry-Shizen Featured By Owner Nov 9, 2012
I take what I like and leave out what I don't, then I get what I left out from another artist, OR keep it slightly close to realism. I do that with body shape and anatomy. I actually started out using eyes similar to Namie's style, but then I moved onto something else since I wasn't too comfortable with the shininess > A <"
I took my noses from the artist who animated Soul Eater, and the hair is something that I developed myself~

I try to stay out of any dA drama because it does get really heated but overall it is terrible that people trace someone else's hard work and sells them u A u"
Iiwi Featured By Owner Nov 8, 2012  Student General Artist
I really loved that heartfilled and truthful journal you just said.
I understand and agree with you on many points.
Like, you have to remember the golden rule to? Wouldn't you want someone to speak to you like a human being when you've done something wrong rather then yell it in your face and call you a name?
People need to think about other feelings first, before they lash out and like you said, look at it from there shoes, there new to the scene, just send them a note and talk with them calmy and most likely they will understand

They won't understand and will get scared and run away if they start getting tons of hate mail, and if you yell at them and it will make them just want to leave.

Wow, that's an adorable story ;^; and yeah I agree about the tracing, tracing helps you to an "EXTENT" it doesn't help you alot because you still need to learn how to freestyle but it does help you somewhat so just credit the picture and your fine.

I agree with you 100%
4 days ago (I love to look at speed paints) I watched a speed paint and in the comments section a person accused that artist thinking they stole another artist's drawing style. Which it is completely true but They didn't really "steal" it. Its called influence. Every one goes through it. That's why this journal reminded me of that.And I hope your journal will definitely inspire others and make them realize that fans want to be just like them. I seriously don't know why they get all pushie over them. I'm a youngster who would totally look up to their idol like that, but Im a bit scared to (O//3//O).

OMg you Yami you're so good at explaining this ; A ;
I can really understand it if the person is young and still taking baby steps. When I was five years old or so I was actually tracing off of storybooks but I never knew it was wrong. Ha xD When I was new to deviantart I really loved a few artists that I tried to copy them here and there but always ended up feeling guilty about it for some reason.
But if the person is going to be immature about it then it's best to kindly tell them to stop instead of talking behind their backs/ telling people to attack them.
Overall, it's good to be inspired here and there but there's a point where you have to actually separate things from being inspired to just being a copy cat for reasons like to piss the artist off.
I have always thought Yamio or Yami was your name so it was kind of surprising to learn that it was from someone you admire xD I have seen a few people who have copied names off of other artists in the past month or so xD When I ask them if they know the person they'd either say they love them or they don't know them at all ; A ; So that got me really confused (and it's the names that are really identical) But then again, I can't just accuse them just like that because it may be true, it may be not. Like how "Puri" seems to be really popular in usernames. I don't have the facts or know the truth xD Plus I don't really mind though... at least that applies to me.

I agree with you to some degree, since I have TONS of my own original manga art styles as a matter of fact. I do semi-realism art like Moni/Ko-Yamii, and I do colouring like Ecthelian. So due to that, it comes out looking about 90% like Ko-Yamii's art style since I colour similar to her and Ecthelian. And it makes me feel so bad to the point where I lied on Ko-Yamii's profile and posted this comment:

"You and [link] have gotten me deeply into the anime side of semi realism art..
I don't want to mock your style but I love it. Do you have any tips on how I can still use your style and morph it into something more original?
I was thinking for starters that I should colour it more realistically but I don't know how much that'd change..."

But truth is I never intended to copy her style to begin with, I just already drew and coloured similarly with the exception of how I do cheek blush now, I actually do cheek blush the way she does when I do semi-realism and even my other original manga styles of art (Which I only have 2 of).

Akshjdkdld;; You explained it very well. ; w ; I feel disappointed when popular artists bash a young kid for editing their pictures.. I used to think it was okay, but now I think some artists take it a little overboard..

Aah, I remember when I made an artist upset by coloring one of her linearts. ^^; Of course I wrote in her name as credit! But I should have asked for permission first. She made me do these ridiculous things, like put her watermark in the picture, and add in all of these copyright symbols, and if I didn't, she would force me to take it down. Which I did, since I had no clue how to add in all of the copyright stuff into a picture. But she kept writing journals about me, and some of her friends would come on my profile and call me names because I made one little mistake. I had to leave my account for a few months so they could calm down before I came back.

I don't remember who she was, but I hope we never cross paths again. ; A ; She was so scary!

ugu. You are such a nice person, and so understanding! ; w ; I wish most people could have a heart like yours, and actually act like role models to young artists. It would make dA such a nice place~ :icononiononionplz:
